Ceylon was under British colonial rule between 1796 and 1948. The island was ceded to the British by the Dutch in 1796, and became a Crown colony in 1802. The British established a system of coffee and tea plantation on the island. The British Ceylon Railway was the railway system that operated in the island of Ceylon during the British colonial period. The first railway line in Ceylon was opened in 1864, between Colombo and Ambepussa. The railway system was primarily used to transport goods such as tea, rubber, and other agricultural products from the hill country to the port of Colombo. The railway also played an important role in the transport of troops and equipment during World War II.
