Animated Line Renderer is the most simple and effective way to animate the Unity Line Renderer component.
With a few lines of script, you'll have your lines animating in length. Set the time to get to full length, along with resetting the Line Renderer so that it fades out nicely.
I've provided an asteroids demo with a phasor that blows up asteroids, along with a painting demo where the line follows the mouse cursor.
